The Phenix project is an interactive presentation presented by the U.S. Scale Masters Association at the 2011 AMA Show in Ontario, Ca. Working in partnership with the California Scale Modelers Association, a team of scale modelers will completely scale out a World War One Fokker DR1 ARF and prepare it for competition in the open class at a Scale Masters competition.

Mark Skoog is NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center expert on collision avoidance.  He is currently leading the Collision Avoidance Technical Stewardship Group for the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Integrated Test Team for the Automatic Collision Avoidance Technology (ACAT) projects.

He has supported a number of UAV efforts for NASA and the Air Force. He has been the NASA Project Manager for the Altair, Predator  B, X-40 and X-37 UAVs.  Previously in his work for the Air Force Flight Test Center he was the project manager for the Global Hawk and Advanced Fighter Technology Integration or (AFTI)/F-16 aircraft.

His technical background stems from the early days of research and development of digital flight controls for aircraft.  This later progressed to the integration of flight controls and avionics for high authority autopilots to automatically accomplish all phases of fighter combat missions.

More recently, in 1998 he conducted the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System testing on the F-16 and in 2003 he conducted the Automatic Air Collision Avoidance System testing.

In 2010 Mr. Skoog concluded research on automatic ground collision avoidance for fighters by leading the ACAT Fighter Risk Reduction Project.

National accolades in collision avoidance include: Joint Chief of Staff Nominee for the Collier Trophy in 1995, recipient of Aviation Week and Space Technology Laurel in 1998, recipient of the Tony LeVier Flight Safety Award in 1998 and 2003, Aviation Week and Space Technology Laureate recipient in 2010 and 2011 Collier Trophy nominee.

Mark has a BS in aerospace engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Lesli Monforton is currently the Chief Pilot for the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center DROID (Dryden Remotely Operated Integrated Drone) project. A long time AMA member, she began flying radio-controlled models as a teenager. Lesli has earned over 100 trophies and awards flying competition and for her work as a research radio-control test pilot.

She earned a BS in engineering from California State University Fresno in 1980. She has been UAS designer, engineer and pilot for the past 30 years.
